What is an Affidavit?
An Affidavit is a self-declaring statement that is sworn or affirmed before a Commissioner for Oaths or Notary Public official. The person making the affidavit (the deponent) affirms that the details provided within the document are true to the best of his/her knowledge. The Affidavit can be used as evidence in court or other institutions.
Normally, Affidavits are deposed to by a person who is over the age of 18. If a minor is required to swear an Affidavit, for example in schooling or travelling situations then an adult will make the statements and sign on behalf of the minor.
What is the purpose of an Affidavit?

Prove your residence or relationship status

What information is needed to create an Affidavit?
An affidavit should be signed by the deponent in the presence of the Commissioner for Oaths or Notary Public. The document should contain:
Deponent’s full names, address, gender, religion and their signature.
Statements of verifiable facts which should be written in the first person.
Designation, signature, stamp and the full names of the Notary Public or Magistrate who witnessed the document.
Date and place where the affidavit is being signed.
In more cases, a passport photograph of the deponent is attached to the Affidavit
Other relevant documents may be attached to the Affidavit as exhibits.
To create an Affidavit, a deponent must be of sound mind and have a full understanding of the contents of and the implications of lying under Oaths, such as perjury.
